ENGIE inaugurates Belgium’s Flémalle power plant, supported by Tractebel’s expertise

ENGIE today officially inaugurated its new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Flémalle. Jointly with ENGIE in Belgium, our energy experts acted as the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM).

The inauguration took place in the presence of Mathieu Bihet, Minister of Energy, Sophie Thémont, Mayor of Flémalle, Catherine MacGregor, CEO of the ENGIE Group, and Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium.

Available to the grid since 31 October 2025, this state-of-the-art power plant provides 875 MW of flexible capacity and is an ideal complement to renewable energy.

EPCM model

Tractebel worked closely with ENGIE in Belgium to provide EPCM services for the project. Over 40 Tractebel experts manage more than 25 contracts requiring a wide range of engineering competences, from mechanical and electrical to civil, geotechnical and environmental engineering. Tractebel also contributed its expertise to the water intake and discharge infrastructure under the Meuse River. Its experts were also involved in the renovation of a building designed to host Flémalle’s future socio-technical-administrative complex and control room.

A new chapter begins

The inauguration of the new Flémalle power plant opens a new chapter in the country’s energy history. The plant is located on a site that has hosted energy production assets since 1951, continuously evolving with changing technologies and needs. Selected in 2021 under Belgium’s Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM), the project now enables ENGIE to make a concrete contribution to the country’s electricity security of supply, while supporting the growing integration of wind and solar energy into the electricity system.

A state-of-the-art power plant

With an installed capacity of 875 MW and a high efficiency of 63%, ENGIE’s new CCGT plant in Flémalle can produce between 4.4 and 5.3 TWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than one million Belgian households. Thanks to its high modulation capacity, it can quickly adjust its output to the needs of the grid. The plant is capable of operating with renewable gases and can be equipped with a CO2 capture system. The Flémalle power plant represents an investment of €650 million. Its construction site mobilised an average of up to 500 people, and 37 employees now ensure its day-to-day operation and maintenance.

The official inauguration, held on 7 September in Flémalle, brings together representatives of the ENGIE Group, ENGIE Belgium, the Federal Minister of Energy, the Walloon authorities and the municipality of Flémalle. Their presence underlines the importance of this industrial project for the region, for Belgium’s energy system and for the transition towards a more flexible, more resilient and more decarbonised energy mix.

With the Flémalle power plant, ENGIE Belgium is making a leading industrial asset available to the country. Complementary to our renewable capacity and our battery parks, this plant is a strong component of Belgium’s energy mix and strengthens the country’s role as an energy hub. It will contribute to grid stability, security of supply and the growing integration of wind and solar power. I would also like to commend the commitment of our teams, our partners and local stakeholders, who enabled this major project to be successfully completed in a demanding context.
