The Challenge
Following the merger of the Virga Jesse and Salvator hospitals, the need arose for a new, state-of-the-art general hospital in Limburg, Flanders. The future facility will accommodate approximately 866 beds and all associated specialties, with a total investment of around €500 million. The challenge lies in designing a large, complex healthcare infrastructure that is flexible, pandemic-proof, and future-ready—while ensuring accessibility, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
The Solution
Tractebel, in collaboration with architects OSAR and Robbrecht & Daem, is leading the design of this flagship hospital. The project integrates all engineering disciplines through process monitoring, BIM methodology, and systems engineering. Tractebel is responsible for all engineering studies, including MEP, structural design, infrastructure (roads, apron, sewerage), EPB compliance, fire safety strategy (active and passive), and acoustics. The hospital will be designed around care pathways, with a strong focus on healing environments, CO₂ neutrality, and renewable energy sources such as geothermal and sewer energy for heating and cooling.
The Impact
Once completed, this hospital will become the most important healthcare facility in the Limburg region, setting new standards for patient care, sustainability, and architectural excellence. Its flexible and human-centered design will ensure long-term adaptability, while its green surroundings and energy-efficient systems will contribute to a healthier environment for both patients and staff. Tractebel’s holistic approach ensures the delivery of a resilient and future-proof healthcare infrastructure..
