The Challenge

The Stiemer Valley, a recognized nature reserve, cuts through the urban fabric of Genk. Historically, canalization and the construction of adjacent sewage collectors have disrupted the natural hydrological and ecological functions of the Stiemer. The challenge is to restore these functions, reintegrating the valley as a thriving ecosystem that supports biodiversity while also fostering human interaction with nature.

The Solution

The masterplan seeks to restore the Stiemer’s natural functionality while creating a coherent sequence of connected landscapes. A series of linear gardens, biodiverse nature zones, and interactive valley edges are interwoven with a continuous pathway that links the valley to the city and a parallel watercourse that provides a hydro-ecological connection to the Maten.

The Impact

The Stiemer Valley will turn into a vibrant green-blue network that reconnects urban sites and fosters engagement between residents, water, and nature. The project enhances biodiversity, water quality, and ecological resilience while providing recreational and social spaces for the community. The valley route facilitates active mobility, linking neighborhoods and creating a dynamic and multifunctional landscape. The pilot project has successfully integrated the valley into the urban fabric, offering a new public culture and a deeper connection between people and nature.
